Have you promised yourself that 2019 will be the year in which you will finally get fit and active? Yes, the year in which, finally, you will manage to go to the gym five days a week and you will even attend that dreaded Saturday spinning class.
Despite good intentions, for many people with demanding jobs, maintaining a regular exercise routine is almost impossible. And it’s totally understandable: when you’re constantly working late, leaving the office at a reasonable hour becomes your top priority, and not getting to the CrossFit class at 7 o’clock in the afternoon.
However, practicing exercise regularly has numerous benefits for both your physical and mental well being: it can help you relax, reduce stress and deal with the demands of your work. Therefore, if you do not know what to do to get more active, read the following ten tips:
Incorporate the exercise on your way to the office
If you are lucky enough to live close enough to your work: walk, do not make excuses and get up a little earlier. On the contrary, for those who live further away, taking a bicycle can be the perfect solution. Even if you go by car or public transport, you can park a little further or get off a couple of stops before, so, walk more.
Make an exercise schedule and complete it
In your professional life you will always prioritize meetings or work calls. Use the same tactic with exercise: reserve 30 minutes each day to exercise. You will be surprised to see how quickly you get used to it.
Do your exercise routine first thing in the morning
There are many people who prefer to get up a little earlier in the morning and perform their exercise routine. For others, it is simply incomprehensible to get up at 5 in the morning to go running. It is not for everyone, that is clear, but if you are one of those who prefer to start the day full of energy and with the endorphins in full operation, it may be the solution you were looking for.
Stay in motion
It is amazing how active you can become simply by modifying small things in your routine: using a standing table, sitting on an exercise ball instead of the usual chair, or taking a walk to rest from the computer screen. The key is to take advantage of any opportunity to move.
You do not have to go to the gym to exercise
Sometimes it is not the exercise itself that takes time away, but driving to the gym, changing clothes, showering afterwards and returning home. In the end, what you could do with a little more than half an hour, you end up taking hours. If you do not have much time, you may go home and put on an exercise DVD to be a better option. Do not discard it!
Make your social events active
Is a dinner with friends, your idea of a night out after work? If so, it’s time for you to implement some changes and combine your social life with more active pastimes. Instead of eating out, go to an indoor football game, go for a walk somewhere beautiful or enroll in a fitness class or any sport with friends. There are hundreds of fun social activities that you are waiting for, why not convince your friends or colleagues to participate in a marathon?
Walk whenever you can
Walking is one of the best ways to exercise to get active, so be sure to do it often. There are many ways to walk more and sit less during work. Here are some:
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
- Instead of sending an email to a colleague in the same office, go talk to him face to face.
- When you’re on a conference call, walk while you talk.
- Send the documents you have to print to the printer that is furthest from your table.
- Take an express ride during your lunch break.
- Set a reminder on your computer to get up and move around every hour.
Take Care of your Eyes
When you are working on your computer, rest your eyes every 40 minutes: first look at a place in the distance for a couple of seconds and then close them and move them up and down, side to side and diagonally.
Take a walk with a friend
Hit up a friend, and go for a walk. Just around the block, the a park or in the forrest. This will help you get off the couch, get some fresh air, reduce blood pressure and you will get a better relationship with that friend.
Today we all know how to monitor or record the exercise we do, so do not forget to take note of your daily steps and activities to propose a new goal for the next day. See how, improvements, can be highly motivating.
As you see, with the options for exercising quickly and effectively that exist, there are no excuses that are worth. Even the busiest person in the world can take a few minutes a day to exercise to get more active, so what are you waiting for?
